Pain Control without Medication
Nerve stimulation is a revolutionary method of pain control that doesn’t require the use of any medication or narcotics. This procedure (sometimes called neuromodulation, central nerve stimulation, or spinal cord stimulation) essentially short-circuits the brain’s perception of pain from the affected nerves. This short-circuiting of the nerves can effectively eliminate pain anywhere from the toes to the middle of the back. This procedure is done by feeding small electrical wires through a tiny puncture in the back up to the epidural space outside of the spinal cord. The epidural space is an empty shell that surrounds the spinal cord. The pain nerves travel in this space and can be “re-programmed” to not sense the pain whereby the brain feels a gentle messaging sensation instead of the pain sensation. It’s almost like a light switch for pain that can be turned on when needed.
At Dayton Interventional Radiology, patients are able to test out the experience of nerve stimulation in our office before any permanent procedure is done. This involves the temporary, non-surgical placement of electrical wires connected to an external battery that allows the patient to become familiar with nerve stimulation so they can make an educated decision on whether or not it is the right treatment for them. Nerve stimulation is one of the most effective and least invasive options of pain management.
